Motorola have unveiled 2 New Tablets - The much anticipated Motorola XOOM 2 and also the Motorola XOOM 2 Media Edition. The main difference between the two devices is the ssize of the unit, weight and the size of the display. The devices are expected to arrive in the UK by the Middle of November.
The new devices run the latest Android Operating System specific to Tablets, Android Honeycomb 3.2. It may come as a surprise to some that the latest XOOM edition does not come with Android IceCream Sandwich however no doubt this update will be on the way soon.
Both devices are similar. They have a 5MP Rear Facing Main Camera, a front-facing secondary 1.3MP camera and both house the same 16GB Memory and 1GB RAM. There is a 1.2 GHZ Dual Core Processor and there is also MotoCast which was revealed recently allowing users to sync files and photo's in the cloud.
The main difference is the weight and size. The XOOM 2 has an excellent 10.1" HD Gorilla Glass Display whilst the Media Edition comes in at a less bulky 8.2" however it is of the same quality. This cuts the weight of the device down by approximately one third.
One noticeable omission is the lack of a Micro SD Card Slot and this comes in line with a statement from Motorola which suggests that these are a thing of the past as customers are happy to store content on-line instead - this may have come too soon for some tablet users. The quotes given to Techradar from Motorola's head of product management Mark Notton is as follows:
"We are definitely focusing on cloud storage [for the new tablets] as the content we're pushing is using this method, so we decided to keep the 16GB capacity as a result. We think the UK is set up for cloud-based connectivity as there are a lot more apps and services out there using this method. For instance, Google Books is all stored remotely and you can then sync the books down. Certainly in the coming years there will be a lot more of a push to cloud storage with the content able to be stored offline."
