On Sunday 7th September at 3pm your phone or tablet will ring and vibrate for 10 seconds signalling the second UK Emergency test alarm.
Why Am I receiving this?
This alert system is being tested so that it is best prepared to warn people of genuine threats in the future. Since the first test in April 2023, the system has already been used, specifically three million people being warned of Storm Darragh.
What will you hear?
The sound will be like a siren – and your device will receive this alert loudly even if your phone is on silent.
If you are in a crowded area, the loud noise will be amplified further by surrounding devices so be aware of this if in a bar, restaurant, show, stadium or other busy event.
Will there be text?
Yes. The alert will also show text on the screen of your device which will be as follows:
“This is a test of Emergency alerts, a UK government service that will warn you if there is a life-threatening emergency. You do not need to take any action. In a real emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe”
Will all devices receive an alert?
No. Devices on the 2G and 3G network will not receive the alert. Only devices on the 4G and 5G network will receive this. It will only work in the UK, so if you are on a sun-lounger abroad you will not receive this.
In addition some older devices running old versions of software, iOS from around 2021 and Android software from approximately 2020, may not receive the alert.
Your device may not receive the alert if your phone is turned off or in airplane mode – however this is not at the moment guaranteed.
